Freedom Fight
Every day, whether we are going to work, taking children to kindergarten or school, jogging along a river, or walking through a forest, we encounter the natural world around us. The landscapes we see constantly change with the weather, the seasons, and even our own state of mind.
Everything we have seen, experienced, heard, or felt remains within us. We may not consciously remember it, but it continues to exist in our subconscious.
Some landscapes stay with us long after we have seen them. They become connected to important moments in our lives and can return unexpectedly through sounds, smells, or images. The sound of a train, a river, or a voice; the smell of rain, smoke, or water; the sight of trees, fields, mountains, buildings, or roads can all trigger memories.
These associations are beyond our control. They arise automatically, often before we are aware of them. Sometimes they bring back joyful memories, and sometimes they return us to moments of pain and loss.
The series of ten paintings, Landscapes?, was created during my residency in Värnamo, Sweden. Surrounded by peaceful lakes, dense forests, long summer sunsets, and the calm flow of the river, I found myself thinking constantly about Ukraine. Everywhere I went, the Swedish landscape reminded me of home.
The landscapes I remembered had been transformed by war. Places once associated with sunflowers and wheat had become marked by blood, destruction, and grief. The colors and memories that once defined them had changed. Through this series, I explore the contrast between the beauty surrounding me in Sweden and the images of Ukraine that remained present in my mind.
